PRECAUTIONS AND WARNINGS: Consult a health care practitioner if symptoms persist or worsen, or if you have a kidney disorder or are taking cardiac medications such as cardiac glycosides or antiarrhythmic medications, or if you are taking thiazide diuretics, corticosteroids, licorice root or other medications or health products which may aggravate electrolyte imbalance, or if you have faecal impaction or symptoms such as abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting or fever. Reduce dose or discontinue use if you experience abdominal pain, cramps, spasms and/or diarrhoea. Long term use of laxatives should be avoided in cases of chronic constipation. Should be used with caution in asthmatics. Concomitant use with other drugs inducing hypokalaemia (thiazide diuretics, adrenocorticosteriods and liquorice root) may aggravate electrolyte imbalance. Treatment should be supportive with generous amounts of fluid. Electrolytes, especially potassium, should be monitored, this is particularly important in the elderly and the young.
CONTRA-INDICATIONS: Do not use if you have liver or gall bladder disorders, and/or bowel obstruction, ou if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have a sensitivity to salicylates, or if you have abnormal constrictions of the gastrointestinal tract, potential or existing intestinal blockage, atonic bowel, appendicitis, inflammatory colon disease such as Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis, abdominal pain of unknown origin, undiagnosed rectal bleeding, severe dehydration with depleted water or electrolytes. Discontinue use if you develop symptoms of liver trouble. Not recommended for use in children. Do not use if you are allergic to anethole or plants of the Apiaceae/Carrot family, or when any undiagnosed or persist symptoms are present.
UNDESIRABLE EFFECTS KNOWN: Hypersensitivity is known to occur, in which case, discontinue use. Chronic use may cause pigmentation of the colon which is harmless and reversible after drug discontinuation. Intake of laxatives for more than a short period of time may result in an aggravation of constipation. Hypokalaemia can result in cardiac and neuromuscular dysfunction, especially if cardiac glycosides, diuretics or corticosteroids are taken. Chronic use may result in albuminuria and haematuria.
